The ideology of feminism is based on the principle for advocating for women rights. Through it women can vote, vie for political seats, take up jobs, get an education, and become leaders . Feminism is the gear that drove women to a new age of enlightenment about their value and worth. However, I believe that over the years feminism has been wrongfully interpreted and utilized.
The concept of feminism has been reduced to a competition between men and women. Attention has been directed towards how women can out power or overthrow men. For example, how can we ensure women have more pay than men, or girls have better grades than boys, and wives have bigger cars or salaries than their husbands. Women have reduced feminism to trivial matters such as; if men can have many sex partners so can women. If this is our thought process then we as women are doomed.
We have created this concept to be a fallacy molded around financial independence, dressing scantily, walking in high heels, and exposure of breasts among other aspects. Women have forged a reasoning that dependence on men is being ‘weak’ or ‘not feministic’. Therefore, their are endless slogans and propagandas on how being attached to a man in any way or form is leading women to their downfall.
Young women seeking corporate leadership are fed this information; that they should stay steadfast on their career path and not be swayed by the devious cunning nature of men who steal women’s dreams using marriage ties and children. If a housewife and a career woman live in the same neighborhood the ‘corporate’ woman is deemed to be more empowered than the housewife. I believe women try to hide behind feminism to disguise their moral and natural limitations.
Nonetheless, I believe that feminism is not in the slightest bit about overpowering or superseding men in any aspect- whether social, economic, or political. It is a power construct by women to exercise free will without being limited by any externalities. In this regard, a woman can choose to be educated/uneducated, to be married/spinster, to be a leader/servant, to vote/or not to vote, and to be a homemaker/a career woman. We are not overcoming male domination but conquering ignorance of what we perceived were unattainable by women.
Women should focus on embracing an enlightened culture which is rid of competing with men. We should create a new mindset or a renewal of the mind towards our understanding of feminism. If we replace patriarchy with matriarchy that means our sons, brothers, and fathers will decades from now begin a rebellion against women that would eventually lead us back to the dark ages where we had no voice. It is not that we should not fight against gender inequality or break the ‘glass ceiling’ but that womanhood/feminism should not in entirety be carved around this.
Being empowered is not necessarily about having our cheque books filled with more zeros than that of men, having one night stands, nails polished, or taking part in walking naked campaigns. Rather, it is the realization that we have the freedom to create a new culture where women support and embrace the power of free will regardless of whether we are above or below men.
